Synopsis
Magallanes
(Magellan), Elcano, Urdaneta, and Legazpi are the heroic
names associated with the famous first global circumnavigation
that took place in the 15th century. This book, part of
the "Narrativas Historicas" series of historical
novels, captures the explorers' adventures, sufferings,
and triumphs.
Rosset,
with many literary works to his credit, including various
Spanish-English grammar guides and two World War II novels,
is an avid investigator of Spanish naval history and a
former merchant marine. He has combined his expe-rience
with extensive historical archival research to produce
this lengthy volume.
The
personalities of these famous historical figures are skillfully
brought to life, and the reader is swept up into the lives
of Juan Sebastian Elcano and Andres de Urdaneta, the central,
heroic characters of the novel. Magallanes, on the other
hand, is characterized as a pompous disciplinarian whose
faults lead to his death as well as the deaths of over
three-quarters of his crew. Source:
